The Esports World Cup(EWC)
The phrase “World Cup” in esports no longer refers to a single, FIFA-run football simulation alone.
Over the past three years it has become an umbrella term for two very different,high-stakes championship cycles that now run in parallel:
– A multi-title Olympic-Style Festival held every Summer in Riyadh
–and the FIFAe World Cup – the official global finals for EA Sports FC (formerly FIFA 23/24).
The Esports World Cup represents the most ambitious turning point in the history of professional competition. With prize pools reaching $70 million distributed across 22 different games, and participation from 1,500 players representing over 200 clubs worldwide, the 2025 edition in Riyadh was a pivotal moment in the journey of esports globalization.
The Esports World Cup (EWC) is the largest and most expensive in esports history, with a $70 million prize pool in the summer of 2025.
EWC was held from July 3rd to August 24th, 2025, and included over 25 games (CS2, Dota 2, LoL, MLBB, FC 25, Valorant…).
· Players competed for the title in each individual game, while clubs competed for the "Club Champion" title based on the total points accumulated across all games.
The leading club so far is Team Falcons, which retained the title for 2025.Team Falcons won $7,000,000, 1 x Gold;2 x Silver;3 x Bronze
5,200 CC Points Achieved.Team Falcons came out on top of the Club Championship through brute force. The Saudi Arabian organization entered the most events in Riyadh, earning one first-place finish along with two silvers and two bronzes. The race was far tighter this year, but Falcons still defended their crown, finishing EWC 25 with 5,200 points and edging out Team Liquid’s 4,200 and Team Vitality’s 4,050.
The Esports World Cup facilitated cultural exchange through competitive gaming. Players from diverse regions – League of Legends professionals from South Korea, Brazilian Mobile Legends teams, European Counter-Strike squads, and FIFA players from the Middle East – converged in Riyadh.
25+ separate tournaments, including Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, PUBG Mobile, EA Sports FC 25, Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, Valorant, Teamfight Tactics and even niche shooters like CROSSFIRE.
Each game runs its own bracket(group → RO16 → knock-outs) while organisations accumulate “Club Points” for every top-eight finish. The club with the most points lifts the EWC Club Championship trophy at the closing ceremony.
Esports Fans
The number of fans (viewers and followers) of esports tournaments worldwide is estimated to be approximately 640-641 million people in 2025, according to reports from Newzoo, Statista, and other reliable sources such as SQ Magazine and ASO World.
The Asia-Pacific region dominates the largest share of the audience, followed by North America and Europe, with notable growth in Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
Basic Gameplay Mechanism
While details vary from game to game, most battle royale games follow this general structure:• A level playing field: All players start with virtually no equipment or weapons and must find them immediately upon starting the game.• A shrinking safe zone: The "safe zone" shrinks over time, forcing players into a smaller area and causing them to collide with each other. Staying outside this zone results in loss of health or defeat.• Gameplay Modes: Players can play solo, with a partner (duo), or in a small team (e.g., 3 or 4 players).eSports have become one of the most important features of the era of technology. Beside that, eSports have played a prominent role in shaping and building awareness of the importance of promoting the values of technological justice, bringing cultures together, and opening horizons.
